Sciatica can turn a morning stroll around the Marietta Square into a series of stops and starts. If shooting leg pain is shaping your days, our Smyrna office can examine your back, hips, and nerve function and create a conservative plan around the findings.
Dr. James Wright earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree at Life University in Marietta and went on to a diplomate in functional neurology from the American Chiropractic Neurology Board. He is not a medical doctor or a surgeon, and he refers out when a problem needs medical or surgical attention.
According to Mayo Clinic, sciatica pain commonly runs from the low back through the buttock and down the back of the thigh and calf, usually on one side, and can come with numbness, tingling, or weakness. A herniated disk or bone spurs are the most common causes (Mayo Clinic, December 2025). We examine strength, sensation, reflexes, movement, and posture to see what looks relevant. Our chronic pain page adds background.
The first consultation is complimentary, and care is one-on-one and private-pay.
Mayo suggests seeing a doctor if sciatica lasts more than a week, is severe, or gets worse, and says emergency care is needed for sudden numbness or weakness or loss of bowel or bladder control. If those apply, call 911 or go to an emergency room first. Otherwise, we offer:
A complimentary first consultation about where the pain travels, when it began, and what makes it better or worse
Review of red-flag symptoms, with a suggestion to seek emergency care when needed
Examination of the low back, hips, and legs, including strength, sensation, and reflexes
A look at movement, posture, and how the nervous system handles the pain
Chiropractic care when it fits
Myofascial release for tight muscles around the hip and low back
Exercises for mobility, stability, and nerve movement, chosen to fit your findings
Guidance on sitting, lifting, and daily activity, and coordination with your doctor or a spine specialist
Whether you are walking the streets near the Square or hiking Kennesaw Mountain on a good day, we want movement to feel less guarded. Exercises are chosen to build mobility and stability.
Sitting is a common trigger for sciatica. We look at your setup and show positions and breaks you can use.
Soft-tissue work, chiropractic care when it fits, and exercises are designed to work together, with a plan that changes as you do.
With your permission, we share findings so imaging or medical decisions are informed.
Marietta is the Cobb County seat and sits just north of the Chattahoochee. Getting to Smyrna means heading south on Cobb Parkway or South Cobb Drive. Life University, Kennesaw State's Marietta campus, and the Dobbins area are all in town, and many people work seated at a desk or behind a wheel. Kennesaw, East Cobb, Acworth, and Powder Springs are other nearby places.
If another office location is easier, read the pages for Smyrna and Atlanta. Some people with leg symptoms also have numbness or burning, covered in our neuropathy page for Marietta, and we also discuss fibromyalgia in Marietta.
1. Reach out: Call or book. If you have new leg weakness or numbness, or lose control of your bladder or bowels, seek emergency care.
2. Your pain story: Dr. Wright asks where the pain travels, what sets it off, and what imaging or treatment you have had.
3. Examination: Testing of the low back, hips, legs, reflexes, and sensation, plus a neurological look at balance and movement.
4. Findings: We explain what we found, whether care here fits, and whether a spine specialist or imaging may be the better step.
5. Care: Care may combine chiropractic care, myofascial work, and exercises, matched to your findings.
6. Review: We track pain and function, change the plan as you improve, and talk about how to keep it from returning.
Conservative care is a common option, and we are open about what we can and cannot do. NCCIH notes that spinal manipulation side effects are usually mild (NCCIH), and we discuss risks first.
That is a decision for your physician. We can examine you whether or not you have imaging.
For many people, yes, but it depends on your symptoms. We help you find a comfortable level.
Dr. Wright studied there. Our office is on Atlanta Road in Smyrna, a short drive from Marietta.
